Red Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus )

They are one of the major pests that attack date palm trees in our region. It is believed that they originally came from India through imported trees during the 80s. Soon after they invaded the date palms causing major damage and haven’t stopped growing since.

These weevils usually lay their eggs on the crown of a date palm and they burrow into the trunk and feed on the sap of the trunk,weakening the tree and eventually killing it and reducing the yield. It’s their larvae that cause the most damage. It’s hard to detect them and sometimes it could be too late.
